Poetic Knowlege Chapter II. Van Gogh

What do you all think about these quotes by Vincent Van Gogh?

It is better to live than work at art...home comes first and painting after. *Could he be talking about poetic knowledge as a predecessor of becoming a master artist?

To paint nature one must live in it a long time.

People will understand the curious relations which exist between one fragment of nature and another, which explain each other.

If one is master of one thing and understands one thing well, one has at the same time insight into and UNDERSTANDING of many things.

It is good to love many things, for therein lies strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done with love is well done. *Do you think he is talking about the love the way presented in Taylor's book?

Everything that is really good and beautiful, of inward moral, spiritual and sublime beauty in human beings and in their works comes from GOD.

I read them in the book Van Gogh, by Ernest Raboff.

That's a great connection and good quotes. I love serendipity in reading and thinking. :)

And it would be easy. They may have it at your library, it is very thin, a paperback for children. These quotes were at the beginning. It just has some of his paintings on the right page, and an explanation on the left.

I got it more for me. I am still working on how to do art study. I do need to print a few prints because reading books about a painter is not the poetic approach for children my girls´age, not the first thing to do, but simply appreciating and observing art.
